Important Information About Your Recent Root Canal Treatment
Your endodontic treatment has been successfully completed, and the root canal system is now permanently sealed. However, it's important to be aware that the outer surface of your tooth is temporarily sealed, necessitating a follow-up restoration to safeguard against fracture and decay.
If we have prescribed medications like antibiotics for you, it is crucial to follow the directions closely and complete the full course, even if your symptoms improve before you finish the medication. In case you experience any swelling or signs of an allergic reaction, such as a rash, difficulty breathing, or facial swelling, please reach out to us immediately or call 911.
We encourage you to contact your restorative dentist and schedule an appointment as soon as possible. Rest assured, we will provide them with a comprehensive report of your treatment. After undergoing endodontic treatment, your tooth may be more susceptible to fractures, so it's crucial to avoid chewing on the affected side until your restorative dentist has placed a core build-up and a protective restoration, typically in the form of a dental crown.
In cases where your tooth's structural integrity is significantly compromised, it is necessary to place a post and core build-up inside the tooth. Once your specific needs are assessed your restorative dentists will determine the most suitable restoration to effectively protect your tooth.
As you recover, it's essential to follow some basic instructions to ensure proper healing and avoid complications. In this guide, we'll provide you with some easy-to-follow post-operative care tips.
- Pain and Discomfort Management. It's normal to experience some discomfort or mild pain after your root canal procedure. Over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen or acetaminophen can help manage this. Always follow the manufacturer's recommended dosage and consult your dentist or pharmacist if you have any concerns. Avoid aspirin, as it may increase the risk of bleeding. If pain persists or worsens after a few days, please contact our office for further guidance.
- Swelling and Bruising. Some swelling and bruising around the treated area are common. To minimize this, you can apply a cold compress or ice pack to the outside of your face, close to the treated area, for 10-15 minutes at a time. Repeat this process every 1-2 hours during the first 24 hours. If swelling or bruising worsens or lasts more than a few days, please contact our office.
- Oral Hygiene. Maintaining good oral hygiene is crucial for the healing process. You can brush and floss your teeth as usual, but be gentle around the treated area to avoid irritating it. Rinse your mouth with warm salt water (1/2 teaspoon of salt in 8 ounces of water) 2-3 times a day, especially after meals, to help keep the area clean.
- Eating and Drinking. It's important to avoid chewing on the treated side of your mouth until the numbness has worn off completely, as you may accidentally bite your cheek or tongue. Once the numbness is gone, stick to soft foods for the first few days to avoid putting too much pressure on the treated tooth. Gradually reintroduce harder foods as your comfort level increases. Stay away from very hot or cold foods and beverages, as your tooth may be temporarily sensitive. Additionally, avoid using a straw when drinking, as the suction can disrupt the healing process.
- Temporary Filling Care. If a temporary filling was placed during your root canal treatment, it's essential to take extra care when eating and cleaning your teeth. Avoid sticky, hard, or chewy foods that could dislodge the filling. Brush gently around the treated area, and floss carefully, making sure not to pull up on the floss when removing it from between your teeth. Contact our office if your temporary filling comes out or breaks.
- Follow-up Appointments. It's important to attend your scheduled follow-up appointments so we can monitor your healing progress and place a permanent filling or crown to protect the treated tooth. If you haven't already scheduled your follow-up appointment, please contact our office to do so.

- Severe pain or swelling that doesn't improve after a few days
- An allergic reaction to any prescribed medication (symptoms may include rash, difficulty breathing, or swelling of the face)

- The treated tooth becomes loose, cracked, or broken
